What’s On Trend in Kitchen Design?

The kitchen is the heart of the home, but it’s one of the rooms people inject their personality and style into the least. Choosing from 3 standard cabinet options and two varieties of stone countertop isn’t enough—homeowners should demand more from the space where they spend so much time! Here are some of the biggest trends in kitchen design right now—what inspires you?

Unexpected Cabinet Colors

Wood and white are timeless, but if you’d like a pop of joy or sense of zen every time you step into your kitchen, consider going with a standout cabinet color.  Some of the bright trends we’re seeing rise up from the neutrals are pink, mauve, or yellow. For a bit of calm while still adding interest, muted greens and ambers give a woodsy sense to your space. Navy blue is still having a moment, but try it out in a different sheen for a modern effect—go glossy!

Mixing Metals

We’re getting the word out for anyone who hasn’t heard—mixing metals in a room is totally ok, and actually encouraged! There’s too much opportunity for interest in a kitchen to stick to just one finish.  The key here is to try to stick to a 70/30 rule—the majority of your hardware in black, with exciting touches of brass throughout, for example.  By sticking to this offset ratio, you’ll create dimension without confusion.

Add Art

We love to see art in every room in the house, and yet somehow, the kitchen is completely ignored. Use that wall space! Heck, use the counter space! Adding small original paintings to your kitchen are a surefire way to add personality to the space. The best part about counter and shelf mounting is that you can switch it out easily, with zero damage to the walls. Change it based on the season, your mood, the weather—whatever feels right for you!

Dedicated Spaces

If you’re lucky enough to have ample square footage in your kitchen, change up the flow so that you’ve got nooks dedicated to how you function.  A tucked away breakfast bar can house the coffee maker, carafes of cereal, and small appliances like the toaster.  Use a butler’s pantry as an appliance locker to hide away all the small electrics that you only rarely use--or, if you love to entertain, set it up as a bar and drink station! Display a wall full of cutting boards near your workspace for the easiest grab-and-go flow.  The point is to think about how you use the space, and organize the contents in a way that makes the most sense.

Natural Elements

Regardless of whether you like calm neutrals or bright pops of color, you can find natural materials that support your design. Obviously wood and marble can add serene touches of nature in your space, but you can also find sea glass, dried flowers, and other types of bright stone for your countertops to inject some pizzazz with organic materials. Bringing natural materials indoors has a grounding effect, no matter your aesthetic.

Freestanding Furniture

Make the concept of a kitchen island even more multipurpose by incorporating freestanding furniture. A large bakers table or larder has all the function of an island or pantry, but it can be moved and adjusted to best meet your needs at any time.  Depending on the piece you choose, freestanding furniture can give an authentic, old-world feel to your kitchen design, or a fresh, sleek and modern vibe.  More people are even moving away from islands and toward a family-style table in the kitchen. Have a seat and prep your meal!

Focal Backsplash

Rather than drawing the same countertop material up the wall or doing a minimal paint effect, homeowners are interested in using the valuable backsplash space to add some individuality to their kitchen design. Bold, deeply veined stone, intricate tilework, and even custom-cut shapes are ways to make something special out of an everyday feature in your kitchen.
