Room Reveal: Scandinavian hygge
It’s commonly said that the kitchen is the heart of the home, but as a dedicated introvert, I believe that the bedroom is truly your sanctuary; where you can recharge, reflect on the day, and prepare yourself for whatever adventures tomorrow brings. Our client was new to Colorado and fully renovating his 100-year-old Craftsman home. He needed somewhere to hide away from all the chaos of renovation.
What better than the cozy comforts of Scandinavian winter-inspired hygge to provide him a quiet place away from the rest of the world? I’m so excited to share the results of our collaboration with you!
Being in a 100-year-old Craftsman home, this was a small bedroom to begin with. Add the fact that it was treated like a glorified hallway with a door on either side, and it offered no peace or privacy. We closed off the doorway into the main living area, providing a more secluded sanctuary feel that made more sense in the home’s layout.
The room had barely any storage, save a small corner closet, so knowing our client’s love for woodwork with a history, we sourced this gorgeously refinished antique hutch to add additional space for clothes. We think the delicate details tell quite a story!
The home’s architecture allowed us to be dramatic with the colors in the room. We drenched the space in a deep blue with grayish-green undertones to capture the feeling of Scandinavian bluster. Our client wasn’t afraid of a dramatic effect, so the walls, trim, and ceiling all received the same tone.
The art in this room was a joy to compile, because our client is a talented photographer! We were able to scour his photo files, choosing these gorgeous wild Icelandic horses to print onto canvas and custom-frame in reclaimed maple. Complementary pieces were sourced from estate sales and vintage galleries, adding to the authentically lived-in feel of the space.
Saturated tones, luxurious fabrics, and rich textures are the touches that make a space not just beautiful to look at, but satisfying to live in. Flannels, knits, and leather all feel masculine, while also cozy and warm. Custom felted-wool curtains in a soft gray and a vintage ceiling fixture give the ultimate in light control, allowing the bedroom to be used exactly as desired, no matter the time of day.
No space can be perfect unless everyone is considered—the sheepskin on the floor is actually a thoughtfully designed memory foam dog bed. This room is truly a dream for the whole family, and we loved showing it off to both our human and canine clients. I hope this reveal highlights the value in leaning into drama and taking colorful risks in your spaces!
